Section head: Prof. dr. M. Huisman (ma.huisman@amsterdamumc.nl)
Understanding how people age – physically, cognitively, emotionally and socially – is at the core of our research. Our section coordinates the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA) and the Healthpath Longitudinal Study (HLS). LASA is a large, ongoing cohort study of adults aged 55 and over. LASA follows older adults over time to unravel changes in daily functioning, identify risk groups, and detect problems at an early stage, with the ultimate goal of promoting healthy and meaningful ageing. HLS is a prospective cohort study among older Dutch workers, aged 60 until retirement age, to investigate their health and functioning and the organisational and sectoral determinants of their health. We combine rich longitudinal data with state-of-the-art methods for repeated measurements. Our work ranges from studying depression and anxiety, falls, functional limitations, intrinsic capacity and cognitive decline to social networks, work performance and perceived control.
Methodologically, we investigate the added value of new statistical techniques for longitudinal data analysis, prediction modelling, machine learning and missing data. In addition, we write applied statistical textbooks to make advanced methods accessible to students, clinical researchers and epidemiologists. We also provide education in statistical methods and develop R packages to ensure that our methods are practically implementable for medical researchers and epidemiologists.
